At the heart of the Million Memory Project Zimbabwe (MMPZ) lies the concept of "memory work," which serves as the essence of its interventions. MMPZ is a private voluntary organization (PVO) registered as a trust in August 2004 and upgraded to PVO status in 2017. Based in Bulawayo, it is youth-led and youth-driven, dedicated to addressing the needs of young people living with HIV. The name "Million Memory Project" was inspired by a collaborative initiative that began with ten African countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, united by a common goal: to reach out to one million children and young people, empowering them towards improved health outcomes. This initiative emerged during a critical period when pediatric antiretroviral therapy (ARV) was virtually nonexistent, and the survival of children living with HIV was precarious, with many not living beyond the age of ten.
MMPZ designs and implements programs that place young people at the heart of decision-making, ensuring their voices shape initiatives addressing HIV prevention, care, and support.
We work closely with families, community leaders, and local stakeholders to create inclusive spaces that foster dialogue, reduce stigma, and promote healthy lifestyles for all youth.
MMPZ prioritizes the safety and well-being of all beneficiaries, ensuring confidentiality, respect, and protection from discrimination in every program we deliver.
We provide counselling, support groups, and mental health resources to help young people living with HIV build resilience and thrive emotionally and socially.
Through workshops, outreach events, and peer-led sessions, MMPZ equips communities with accurate, accessible information on HIV prevention, treatment, and sexual health.
We collaborate with government agencies, NGOs, and healthcare providers to strengthen referral networks and improve access to health services for vulnerable youth.
MMPZ offers training and mentorship to empower young people with life skills, leadership abilities, and opportunities for personal and professional growth.
We actively advocate for youth rights, inclusive health policies, and greater community awareness to create a supportive environment for those affected by HIV.
Our mission is to bridge the gap and empower socially vulnerable children and young people, especially those living with HIV. We are dedicated to transforming lives through holistic mental health approaches, comprehensive psychosocial support, and accessible HIV testing and treatment, along with sexual and reproductive health rights (SRHR) services.
By cultivating community partnerships and driving behaviour change around gender and social norms, we strive to create a supportive environment that champions human rights and gender equality. Our initiatives promote awareness and provide caregiver support, fostering inclusivity that dismantles stigma. Together, we enable youth to thrive and become advocates for positive change in their communities.
We envision a resilient and empowered generation of children and young people living with and affected by HIV and AIDS in Zimbabwe, where every individual has equitable access to psycho-social support services and economic opportunities.
